PlayStation’s latest glorious next-generation console, the PS5, has been gracing homes across the world for nearly two years now. Yet, many users still aren’t truly harnessing all that the PS5 has to offer – that’s because it requires a proper TV upgrade.
The TV market is an entirely different kettle of fish – it can be incredibly confusing with heaps of jargon that’s not exactly easy to decipher, but don’t worry, we’ll fill you in on the details.
Not every TV – 4K or not, is going to be perfect for the PS5, so we’ll do a bit of jargon-busting, then tackle a few of the absolute best TVs for PS5 gaming that we cannot recommend enough. If you find yourself wondering what’s the best option out there, we’re going to help you find it. Sound good?
4K TVs
A 4K TV is a television with a screen resolution of 3840 x 2160p – this refers to the number of pixels within the screen itself, the higher the pixel count, the greater the resolution which generally creates a sharper, more brilliant picture. This is four-times that of a standard HD TV.
While you may find yourself resisting the urge to simply pick up the cheapest 4K TV on the market and call it a day, not every 4K TV is suitable for the PS5, some have particularly low refresh rates that will limit the experience.
Refresh rate
Refresh rate is the measure of the number of new images a display can create per second, the higher the refresh rate, the smoother the output.
A standard 4K TV generally runs at 60 Hz, that’s 60 new images being displayed per second, which is all-in-all an acceptable refresh rate. But it isn’t going to blow your mind.
Instead, try to find deals on TVs with a refresh rate of 120 Hz, double that of your standard TV, and gameplay will feel smoother than ever before.
OLED
An OLED TV uses Organic Light Emitting Diodes to produce light, unlike your standard LED screen that uses a backlight. The benefit of this fairly new technology is the impeccable refresh rate and the microsecond input lag which is pretty much unbeatable.
However, there are certain minor drawbacks from OLEDs that may make you change your mind – namely the lower screen brightness, meaning that colours don’t pop quite as well as they do on a QLED TV. Generally, we’d recommend OLED for slightly darker rooms.
QLED
QLED or Quantum Dot Light Emitting Diodes are essentially LEDs that use a crystal diode to produce a vastly brighter and wider colour spectrum, with generally about triple the brightness of a standard OLED screen on average. Unlike OLED, this makes them suited to use in well-lit areas.
Despite QLED screens having weaker refresh rates generally, this year we’ve seen several excellent 120 Hz QLED screens crop up here and there, which are undeniably worth checking out.
