Rocky Rambo Wei Nam Kam is sentenced to life in prison with no parole possibility for 25 years in connection with the brutal double murder in 2017 of an Vancouver couple.
The verdict was handed down in a Vancouver court on Tuesday.Rocky Rambo Wei Nam Kam is sentenced to life in prison
Kam is found guilty, in the month of June. first-degree killings Dianna Mah-Jones who was a renowned occupational therapy therapist in GF Strong, and her husband Richard Jones, who was retired and dependent on the assistance of a walker in September of 2017.
In the course of trial, Kam admitted to forcing his access into the home of the couple in Marpole in the Marpole area, where he employed the knife and a hatchet for the executions. Kam also claimed that he did not know the couple and had no motive to harm the couple.
Security footage from Canadian Tire that was shown in court, showed Kam buying a hatchet as well as other tools two weeks before the murders.
The Crown had requested Kam’s sentence to run in a series, which means he’d be in prison prior to parole eligibility.
But, the defense argued for the obligatory term of life imprisonment for 25 years preceding parole admissibility.
The lawyer for Kam, Glen Orris, previously declared that he believed this double killing was an horrible crime.
He also said that a sentence of 50 years without parole could mean that Kam was not eligible to apply until he reached 75, which means there’s no possibility for Kam to get his rehabilitation in prison.
In the sentencing process, Justice Laura Gerow said the victims were innocent, defenseless strangers killed in their homes in violent and prolonged attacks.
She informed the court that the possibility of parole for someone who has committed multiple murders is low and concluded that this was not the right case to apply to be considered a case of consecutive ineligibility for parole as it could be “unduly lengthy and severe.”
Justice Gerow added she had not enough evidence to reach her conclusion that greater amount of time was required in order to protect the public.
She also mentioned statements about the impact of the victim from family and friendsthat said that Mah-Jones was vibrant and fun-loving, and his husband was warm and caring and generous.
“No sentence can ever bring these rights for you.” she declared.
The prosecutor Daniel Mulligan said while it was not the outcome they had hoped for it’s clear that the judge looked at the law and circumstances.
I’m hoping that in the duration of his stay in prison, through psychiatric counseling and tests, experts can identify his motives. At this time it is not his decision to reveal his motives with us.”
Mulligan stated that the conviction and sentence is a tribute to the “exceptional” work by the Vancouver police as well as public members who assisted them.
“For example, more than 100 business and private individuals such as Canadian Tire, provided surveillance footage to police which allowed the police to create an outline that traces Mr. Kam’s movements prior to and following the murders,” Mulligan said. “I am hoping that this sentencing and verdict brings some peace to the families members and loved ones of Dianna Mah-Jones as well as Richard Jones, and I’m hoping that from now onwards, they’ll be focusing less on their deaths and more about celebrating the lives they lived their lives.”
Mulligan said the decision was not yet made. decide whether an appeal of the sentencing decision will be taken into consideration.
