Robin Buckley (Maya Hawke) is shocked to meet their crush Vickie ( Anne with an E‘s Amybeth McNulty) in the War Zone army supply store. While Robin is heartbroken to spot Vickie kissing an unknown man — later identified as her soon-to-be-ex-boyfriend — viewers were likely delighted to discover just how much Vickie looks like Molly Ringwald in classic John Hughes rom-coms like Pretty in Pink and Sixteen Candles.
“My source of inspiration was Molly with her shorter hair which was also in Sixteen Candles,” head hair designer Sarah Hindsgaul shares with Tudum via email. Hindsgaul first sent pictures of the film to her hairdresser Robert Pickens. It was a coincidence that Ringwald was in Pickens studio to make an appropriate wig for a different series, and was informed of the Stranger Thingsmuse status. “She was so excited that she informed him of the exact shade she dyed her hair in the 80s, and this is how we came up with the color that is exactly right. It’s the exact shade,” Hindsgaul says. In order to create Victoria’s “Papa” appearance Hindsgaul applied Kevin Murphy mousse for a “soft natural, natural look” and a tiny brush for added energy.
Hindsgaul’s crew was able to talk directly with RIngwald herself However, the other members crew of other members of the Thingscrew did not have the same access. They had to come up with their own ideas. “The cap is very similar in form but is not exactly the same as a molly Ringwald costume,” costume designer Amy Parris says to Tudum. She came across the accessory at the flea market located in Long Beach and knew it was “perfect” for McNulty after she was chosen to play her.
This is the way ‘ Vickie Stranger Things’ made Vickie Beautiful in Pink
Parris confirms that the style indicates that the high school student Vickie is “definitely inspired by Molly and other popular John Hughes movies” but remains her individual “unique” individual. “The style with the makeup and hair is reminiscent of Molly but not too an exact match,” Parris says.
Makeup artist head Amy L. Forsythe used two MAC blushes in order to create the look of Vickie’s makeup homage at the Ringwald’s Pretty in Pinkcharacter Andie Walsh Andie Walshjust just right. “I have all my blushes on hand and picked the one that reads the way I wanted the color to look look on Fair skin toned Vickie,” Forsythe tells Tudum. “It was important to have it perfectly in balance with the cool-toned slate shade I chose to put on her line of lashes.”
The tiniest of details make this outfit stand out, right to the jewellery. According to Parris states, “When we really started to delve towards this trend, we leaned into “Pretty in Pink” references, I stumbled across the vintage earrings on the internet and instantly felt as that if Andie were transformed into an earrings, this is the way she’d look in.” And we’ll love these earrings… every time.
