How to Know If Someone Blocked You on WhatsApp

How to Know If Someone Blocked You on WhatsApp

Carmen Nelson, September 8, 2025

It can be frustrating when you message someone on WhatsApp and never get a reply. You might wonder, “Did they block me, or are they just busy?” WhatsApp does not send a notification when someone blocks you. Instead, there are a few signs that may suggest it. None of these clues is 100% certain on its own, but if you see several together, there’s a good chance you’ve been blocked.

Signs That You May Be Blocked

1. You Can’t See Their “Last Seen” or Online Status

If you open a chat and can’t see when they were last online or if they’re currently online, it may mean one of two things: they’ve changed their privacy settings, or they’ve blocked you. Some people hide this information from everyone, so don’t rely on this clue alone.

2. Their Profile Picture Is No Longer Visible

If you used to see their profile photo but now it’s blank or just shows the default avatar, that’s another possible sign. Again, some people remove their profile photos for privacy, so it’s not proof by itself.

3. Messages Show Only One Tick

Normally, when you send a WhatsApp message, you see one gray tick when it’s sent, and two gray ticks when it’s delivered. Two blue ticks mean it’s read. If your messages stay at one gray tick for days, it means they’re not being delivered. A block can cause this, but so can network issues, or if the person’s phone is off or uninstalled.

4. WhatsApp Calls Don’t Go Through

Try making a voice or video call. If it always fails to connect or never rings, that can also mean the person has blocked you. But remember: poor internet or switched-off phones can also cause failed calls.

5. You Can’t Add Them to a Group

This is one of the most reliable tests. If you try to add them to a WhatsApp group and you get a message saying you’re not allowed to add them, it usually means they have blocked you.

Important: None of These Signs Alone confirms a Block

It’s important not to jump to conclusions. Each sign has other possible reasons. The person may have changed their privacy settings, uninstalled WhatsApp, or lost access to their account. Only when several of these signs appear together does a block become more likely.

What You Should Do Next

If you suspect someone has blocked you, respect their privacy. A block is a choice. It might be temporary, or it might mean they no longer wish to communicate. It’s best not to try to bypass a block by using other numbers or accounts doing so may violate trust and personal boundaries.

Instead, if you have an important reason to reach them, consider other respectful ways to contact them (for example, email or a mutual friend), but always keep boundaries in mind.

Final Thoughts

Figuring out how to know if someone blocked you on WhatsApp can be tricky. There’s no direct alert, but clues like missing profile pictures, undelivered messages, and failed calls can point in that direction. The best approach is to stay calm, look at the bigger picture, and respect the other person’s decision. After all, communication works best when it’s mutual.
